  • Good morning everyone.

  • Thank you so much for attending.

  • I'm going to present some of the main insights of my current research.

  • titled, Bullies Played by Bullies, Lessons from Mexico.

  • So the main question that has guided my research is try to understand what motivates a student to become a bully.

  • Now there is this idea and common narrative that bullies are pretty much monsters with inherent evil nature.

  • And when we think about this, we think about, for example,

  • Nelson from The Simpsons, and we see other characters that they are just there for harping harm.

  • other people without really any specific cause just for the sake of doing harm.

  • Now, to give you some context about bullying in Mexico,

  • according to the last figures, we have a very severe problem.

  • According to the Enadis, we have all 3.3 million of adolescents victim of bullying.

  • We have almost 3 million as well of adolescents victims of cyberbullying.

  • And while the numbers according to the OCDE, Mexico will be in the average of the organization,

  • some estimation from NGOs states that Mexico might be the first worldwide in terms of bullying,

  • that pretty much contribute to 60% of child suicide in the country.

  • Now, the numbers are already green, but if we take a look to the cases, we see even a war situation.

  • We have the case of Norma Lisbet who was killed during a fight and her video went viral.

  • We had the case of the teacher Patricia who was stabbed during her class by one of her students.

  • Or we have the case of Juan who was burned alive just for the sake of speaking an indigenous language.
