  • I'm Georgina Godwin.

  • Today's guest is one who is experiencing an extraordinary career.

  • As a multimedia artist, poet and novelist,

  • she 's the recipient of numerous fellowships and her literary and visual work has been widely published on platforms such

  • as The New Yorker, Los Angeles Review of Books, American Poet and many, many more.

  • Her debut novel, Promise, was a Kirkus Reviews and Chicago Public Library Best Book of the Year in 2013.

  • In 2021, she married the author Salman Rushdie.

  • That very same day, her best friend, the poet Kamala Aisha Moon, was set to speak at their wedding.

  • She died suddenly and unexpectedly.

  • Within the first year of their marriage, she faced another tragedy once again,

  • when Rushdie was nearly killed in a knife attack at a reading.

  • These two astonishing events are recounted in her first memoir,

  • The Flower Bearers, an interweaving story of love, grief and finding place in an altered world.
