I'm Georgina Godwin.
Today's guest is one who is experiencing an extraordinary career.
As a multimedia artist, poet and novelist,
she 's the recipient of numerous fellowships and her literary and visual work has been widely published on platforms such
as The New Yorker, Los Angeles Review of Books, American Poet and many, many more.
Her debut novel, Promise, was a Kirkus Reviews and Chicago Public Library Best Book of the Year in 2013.
In 2021, she married the author Salman Rushdie.
That very same day, her best friend, the poet Kamala Aisha Moon, was set to speak at their wedding.
She died suddenly and unexpectedly.
Within the first year of their marriage, she faced another tragedy once again,
when Rushdie was nearly killed in a knife attack at a reading.
These two astonishing events are recounted in her first memoir,
The Flower Bearers, an interweaving story of love, grief and finding place in an altered world.
Rachel Eliza Griffiths, welcome to Meet the Writers.
Thank you so much for having me.
You grew up in Wilmington in Delaware in a household that was shaped by discipline,
by Catholic schooling and very clear ideas about respectability.
I wonder if you could paint that house for me.
