  • For those who don't know me, my name is Larry Kramer.

  • You're not here to see me, but I'm the president and vice chancellor here at LSE,

  • and it is my privilege to welcome you to this very special event co-hosted

  • by the School of Public Policy and the Feeling United States Center.

  • I've known Frank for a long time,

  • but I have notes, so I'm going to do this intro from my notes just so you know.

  • We're lucky to hear from someone who's unquestionably one of the most influential political scientists alive,

  • arguably the most influential one.

  • Over the past 40 years, Frank Fukuyama's writings on democracy, liberalism, and the foundations

  • and future of political order have repeatedly changed the conversation on those and other crucial topics,

  • and not just in the academy, but in the media and in the halls of government as well.

  • Now, Frank has many very special achievements.

  • I'm not going to go through all those.

  • There is one, though, that's a very rare mark of intellectual fame and something

  • I do want to note at the outset, and that's this.

  • Despite being a prolific author who has more readers than all but a tiny handful of scholars,

  • Frank has that rarest of accomplishments, namely that far more people have an opinion
