  • Welcome to the LSE events podcast by the London School of Economics and Political Science.

  • Get ready to hear from some of the most influential international figures in the social sciences.

  • Okay, welcome everyone to this LSE public event to mark the launch of the new book by Liam Byrne,

  • Why Populists Are Winning and How to Beat Them.

  • So in this rather quiet, uneventful week for UK politics,

  • it 's great that so many of you could be here with us tonight, both in person and online.

  • My name's Andy Summers.

  • I'm an Associate Professor in the Law School here at LSE and Director of the Centre for Analysis of Taxation,

  • Liam will appreciate if I say right away that copies of his book will be available to buy outside the lecture theatre

  • Hodge Hill and Solihill North, a member of the Privy Council and chair of the House

  • of Commons Business and Trade Select Committee.

  • He's also an influential figure within the Tribune group of Labour MPs.

  • But beyond all these impressive affiliations, he's also a deep thinker in his own right.

  • He has written, by my count, no less than five sole-authored books,

  • and his latest has been received, I think it 's fair to say, with some critical acclaim.

  • Tonight, I expect we 'll hear both acclaim and criticism,
