单集简介 ...

Campaigns across the country are leaning into immigration issues, spurred in part by recent fatal shootings by federal immigration officers in Maine and Texas. We discuss how politicians on both sides of the aisle are using the issue and why Republicans in particular see immigration enforcement as a winning message. This episode: senior political correspondent Tamara Keith, immigration policy correspondent Ximena Bustillo, and senior national political correspondent Mara Liasson. This podcast was produced by Bria Suggs and edited by Rachel Baye. Our executive producer is Muthoni Muturi. • We've got some early answers.

  • It's the NPR Politics Podcast.

  • I'm Tamara Keith.

  • I cover politics.

  • I'm Ximena Bustillo, and I cover immigration policy.

  • And I'm Mara Liason, senior national political correspondent.

  • Ximena, there have been two fatal shootings this month involving ICE officers, first in Texas, then last week in Maine.

  • How have those incidents altered the conversation over immigration enforcement?

  • Both by immigration and customs enforcement officers, neither was the target of the arrests.

  • And so this has renewed conversations about the tactics, the training, the direction

  • and directive that these ICE officers are being given to result in deaths of individuals

  • who were not even the target of the arrests.

  • And you mentioned it, but both of these incidents involve traffic stops, and that has gotten a lot of focus.
