His appointment will certainly enrich the intellectual life of our students and our colleagues,
and is a particularly welcome addition to the department as we approach our centenary in 2027. Tonight's
inaugural lecture entitled Weaponizing Dependency of the New World Order explores how economic interdependence,
technological networks, and global supply chains have increasingly become instruments of geopolitical power.
As states seek to leverage trade, energy, finance, and critical technologies to advance their strategic interest,
longstanding assumptions about globalization, international cooperation, and security are being called into question.
These developments raise fundamental questions about the changing nature of power, the vulnerabilities created
by economic interdependence, and the prospects for cooperation and resilience in an increasingly fragmented world order.
There are questions of enormous importance, both for scholars for international relations
and for those grappling with the practical challenges of policymaking.
Before we get into tonight's event, just a few housekeeping points.
