I'm Georgina Godwin.
For some people, the Himalaya are a distant landscape of peaks and pilgrimage.
For others, they become home.
My guest today lives high in the Kumar hills of northern India in a small house surrounded by forest
where leopards pass through at night, birds mark the seasons,
and dogs often know the landscape better than the humans who share it.
She's the author of the novels An Atlas of Impossible Longing, The Folded Earth,
Sleeping on Jupiter, All the Lives We Never Lived and The Earthspinner.
She also co-runs the independent publishing house Permanent Black.
Her new book is a memoir about building a life in the mountains
and the people, animals and friendships that shape that life.
The book is Called by the Hills, a home in the Himalaya.
