  • The move follows Israel's decision to open the bidding for more than 1,000 new homes in the E1 area,

  • a strategically sensitive tract of land east of Jerusalem that Britain

  • and other allies say effectively cuts the West Bank in half.

  • It accuses Israel more generally of expanding Jewish settlements

  • in order to jeopardise any chance of a future two-state solution.

  • The measures are designed to target individuals and businesses connected to settlement activity,

  • but also more generally to send a message about growing concern in London over the pace of expansion.

  • The British government is describing the move as part of a comprehensive reset of UK-Israel relations.

  • And today, 11 other countries, including France and Canada, announced their intention to introduce similar restrictions.
