  • Good evening, everyone, and welcome to this old theatre at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

  • And also, good evening, good afternoon, good morning online, depending on wherever you are.

  • It's a great pleasure to see all of you here tonight in this theatre.

  • And my name is Hyun Bang Shin.

  • I'm Professor of Geography and Urban Studies and also the Head of Department

  • in the Department of Geography and Environment.

  • I'm very delighted to be chairing tonight's public lecture,

  • which is hosted by the Department of Geography and Environment and also by the Global School of Sustainability,

  • which also made this event possible with the support that was given to invite Professor Amit Babiska.

  • Let me begin with a brief observation.

  • When we talk about climate change, we often talk in degrees, targets, and timelines.

  • But for most people, climate change is not first encountered in policy documents or models.

  • It is encountered at night when sleep becomes difficult,

  • during the working day when heat shapes who can labor and how, and in the quiet reorganization of everyday life.

  • That is the world this lecture takes seriously.

  • It is therefore a great privilege to welcome our speaker this evening,

  • Professor Amita Babiska, one of the most influential and respected scholars working at the intersection of environment,

  • inequality, and social life in South Asia.
