Jessica Pegula watched players her age break through while injuries repeatedly interrupted her own career. After years outside the top 100, she began to wonder: “Is this not meant to be?” In this episode of The Insight, Jessica reveals why arriving later ultimately became one of her greatest strengths. She opens up about the injuries and comparisons that tested her belief, the moment she decided to take complete ownership of her career, and how building the right team helped transform her trajectory. She also explains why the calm exterior people see on court doesn’t always reflect what she is feeling—and why trying to manufacture emotion only made competing more exhausting. Jessica speaks candidly about becoming too focused on results, the burnout that followed, and how small goals—improving a kick serve or developing a drop shot—helped her rediscover the satisfaction of the craft. She also reflects on finally overcoming the Grand Slam “barrier” and reaching the US Open final, only to discover how quickly professional tennis moves on to the next match. Her biggest realization: success isn’t a single destination. The dream is the journey itself—the difficult weeks, the strange losses, the people beside you and the stories you collect along the way. This is an honest conversation about comparison, emotional authenticity, late success and learning to build a career that truly belongs to you. 单集文稿 ...

  • The transition to top 100, you had to go through injuries

  • and maybe a bit more time than some players to pass that important step, let's say in tennis.

  • Did you have doubt that you will be able to make it?

  • Yeah, it took me so long and I kept getting close and then I kind of get hurt.

  • And then like I'd come back and I'd get back to like,

  • you know, top 150. Then I get kind of hurt again.

  • So it felt just it started to become like this hurdle that like I couldn't.

  • I was like, why can't I just break this this goal?

  • Like it's, you know, it becomes bigger in your mind than it probably is.

  • And luckily, I was able to to do that.

  • Finally, I don't know how old I was, maybe 25 or 26. And I felt.

  • Just relieved i was like oh that wasn't like that hard like why was i because i think i just started

  • making it like it's not going to happen like i keep having these roadblocks

  • and you're like is this not meant to be i'm not sure and i just had a different

  • career i just did a lot better a lot later um and everyone

  • else i knew already did it so it it kind of became like drawn out and i think a bigger

  • deal in my head than it it really was i mean i think it was good i set it as a goal

  • but then after i did it i was like okay that was like not that difficult

  • i think also in tennis obviously like the cap of the 100 is important as a ranking

  • but also in me it means like you qualify directly for the slam yeah and it's funny because you play qualifying
