  The White House has been involved in a flurry of diplomacy and mediation in the Middle East in recent days.

  Over the weekend, President Trump abruptly withdrew threats of strikes on Iran,

  saying once again a deal to end the war was coming into focus.

  This came after mediators reportedly presented Iran with a proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz,

  and a number of Gulf states urged Trump to hold off on attacks and keep discussing diplomatic solutions.
