单集简介 ...

What did Jesus really think about money? When he overturned the tables of the money changers in the Temple in Jerusalem, accusing them of turning a sacred "house of prayer" into a "den of robbers", he also set off a series of events that would eventually lead to his death. But what exactly was he attacking? The traders themselves, or the wider economic and religious system they represented?  Biblical scholar Tom Thatcher joins Gillian and Robin to explore the financial world of Jesus of Nazareth - from taxation, debt and inequality to the extraordinary economic power of that Temple in Jerusalem. Plus, if Jesus were alive today, where would he sit on the political and economic spectrum? Could his ideas about money and inequality offer a challenge to the way we think about capitalism today? Could he even be described as socialist? • In 1898, John Nuveen had a vision to underwrite

  • municipal bonds that would propel American infrastructure into the 20th century.

  • More than 125 years later, that vision lives on.

  • Today, Nuveen has grown into a leading global asset manager with expertise spanning public and private markets,

  • still investing with a future in mind.

  • Investing involves risk.

  • Principal loss is possible.

  • Jesus' story of money could not live alongside the stories that the people

  • who ran the machine in his day were telling, so they killed him.

  • The message from Jesus around money might be described today as pretty anti-capitalist.

  • You're trying to insult half of America at whatever we're doing now, aren't we?

  • One of my own favorite stories are these big urns where people would come and make donations.

  • And this old woman comes up who's got two pennies.

  • That's all that she puts in.

  • And Jesus says, hey, she gave everything she had.

  • Less than a week after he said that, he was dead.

  • Today on the story of money, imagine being arrested and executed after you disrupt the operation of a currency market.
