单集简介 ...

Despite his message at the first-ever Republican midterm convention this week, President Trump’s brand is weak. His approval rating is hanging at about 35 percent, and even die-hard MAGA Republicans are frustrated by his war with Iran, gas prices, and tariffs.  There’s an opportunity here for Democrats. The question is whether they’ll be able to seize it. Sarah Longwell is the publisher of “The Bulwark,” and she has some candid advice for Democrats in her new book, “How to Eat an Elephant: One Voter at a Time.” Longwell joins the show to explain what she’s learned from conducting hundreds of focus groups with voters and what it will take to beat MAGA.  - - - Get more from your favorite Atlantic voices when you subscribe. • Just come and vote.

  • It's so important.

  • Trump is so sure that he is the key to Republican victories

  • that he's insisted on holding a Republican convention slash Trump rally in Dallas this week, where he'll deliver,

  • quote, presidential keynote, presumably to help voters envision when they're in the booth that he's on the ballot.

  • But this whole scenario is true only in Trump's imagination.

  • As Democrats are well aware, and no doubt gloating over, Trump is not, in fact, very popular at the moment.

  • His approval rating was at 33% at the end of August.

  • And even MAGA Republicans are bristling at the war in Iran, tariffs and high gas prices.

  • Trump is as underwater as I've seen him in all of the years that I've been focused on politics

  • in the Trump era, in large part because much like George W. Bush toward the end of his time in office,
