First of all, welcome to the LSE, to this event this evening.
My name is Aaron Reeves and I'm a professor of sociology at the Department of Sociology here at the LSE.
It's wonderful to be able to see a few of you here this evening and I know more will be coming.
So before kind of formally introducing our speakers this evening, allow me to do maybe just a little bit of housekeeping
and say first, just remind you to put your plant on silent for us.

So it's my pleasure to introduce Julian Goh this evening, first of all.
Julian is a professor of sociology at the University of Chicago.
Professor, among other appointments, but I'll maybe just focus on that.
But Professor Goh research explores, among related questions, the social logics of empire and colonialism.
His work is critical in insisting that we cannot understand the modern world,
