  • Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Corva Coleman.

  • White House officials say the U.S. is moving closer to an agreement

  • to end the war with Iran and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

  • NPR's Jane Araf says this came even as both sides traded fire this week.

  • Here's the latest from Vice President J.D. Vance last night in Washington.

  • He said, "We're not there, but we're very close." He did say, though,

  • that it's hard to say if or when President Trump would sign a deal.

  • So there's that uncertainty.

  • U.S. and Iranian officials over the past week have said that a potential deal would reopen

  • the Strait of Hormuz and it would leave nuclear talk.

  • Meanwhile, Iran has insisted that any peace deal come with an end to Israel's war in Lebanon.

  • Israel is fighting Hezbollah militants in Lebanon and has actually stepped up its attacks there.

  • Israel has also widened its zone of attack in Lebanon.

  • Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, says he will crush Hezbollah.

  • Thousands of Lebanese civilians have also been killed by Israeli strikes.

  • Officials in Romania say a Russian drone has crashed into an apartment building.

  • It happened overnight in an eastern Romanian city.

  • Two people were hurt.

  • The drone was apparently aimed at neighboring Ukraine.

  • Romania is asking its NATO partners to speed up deliveries of anti-drone capabilities.
