This is English Through Stories, Episode 1 of Missing Person.
Welcome to the first episode of English Through Stories, Missing Person.
This program is for intermediate and advanced learners of English who are looking for a fun,
relaxing way to improve their listening comprehension and their speaking.
My name is Dr. Jeff McQuillan.
I'm your host, coming to you from the Center for Educational Development in Los Angeles, California.
The format of English Through Stories is very simple.
We will begin by recapping
or reviewing the previous episode for all of the episodes except the first one, such as today.
Then we will read part of the story,
and the story is going to be a dramatic story, what we would call in English a melodrama,
where there is lots of emotion and romance and sometimes murder, all sorts of interesting things happening to people.
Another word we give to this kind of drama in English is a soap opera.
So this is essentially a soap opera in English.
We'll be reading one part of the story each week.
After that, we will stop and explain and go over some of the story that may have been difficult,
talk about some expressions and vocabulary and so forth.
As you're listening to the story, don't worry about trying to understand every word,
but rather try to get the general meaning.
