New York Governor Kathy Hochul has named the state's
attorney general to take over as special prosecutor overseeing the alleged rape case at Cornell University.
Hochul says she has lost confidence in the local prosecutor.
NPR's Brian Mann reports.
Hochul said in a statement she no longer has confidence in Tompkins County DA Matthew Van Houten after it was revealed
that he shelved his investigation of the case in 2024 without
seeing a full transcript of the woman's account of the alleged rape.
New information has raised serious questions about how this case was handled, Hochul wrote.
She added that the alleged victim deserves to know that every fact will be examined and justice pursued.
Week didn't respond to NPR's request for comment.
