  • Welcome to the LSE events podcast by the London School of Economics and Political Science.

  • Get ready to hear from some of the most influential international figures in the social sciences.

  • So good evening and welcome.

  • For those who don't know me, my name is Larry Kramer, and I'm the president and vice chancellor here at LSE.

  • And it 's my pleasure and honor to welcome you to this very special event,

  • co-hosted by the Grantham Institute, the Global School of Sustainability,

  • and the Suntory and Toyota International Centers for Economic and Related Disciplines,

  • which around here is known as Stickard.

  • Now, I'm going to say I'm a materialist, which used to drive my wife crazy.

  • She was very spiritual by nature, so I don't usually believe in things like fate.

  • But then sometimes you do just have to wonder.

  • Today, April 22nd, is Earth Day.

  • And by coincidence, it is also Professor Lord Nicholas Stern's birthday.

  • It is, in fact, his 80th birthday, which seems impossible and has me wondering whether Nick is,

  • in fact, one of those immortal warriors competing for the prize in Highlander.

  • Okay.

  • Ooh, I would head there.

  • That may be too obscure a reference for those who don't indulge in cheesy sci-fi as I do.

  • In any event, given his life's work, one could hardly think of a better day to celebrate Nick than Earth Day,

  • nor a better day to celebrate the Earth than Nick's birthday.
