单集简介 ...

Seen as pests in some parts of Asia, long-tailed macaques are highly sought-after in the world of biopharmaceutical research for drug development. But now a worldwide shortage means one monkey can sell for tens of thousands of dollars, so what’s driving up the cost? China’s fast-developing biopharmaceutical industry has created more demand for macaques, and South East Asia is jumping on the opportunity to deliver. Indonesia is resuming its export of macaques, to the chagrin of animal welfare groups who warn it may worsen the exploitation of an endangered species. Not just any monkey can be used for testing. Only captive-raised macaques are suitable, fuelling concerns that higher prices could lead to “monkey laundering” - where poached monkeys from the wild are introduced into the captive system under false records. On this episode of Asia Specific, host Mariko Oi is joined by the podcast’s Editor Bill Birtles, Bloomberg Asia pharma reporter Amber Tong and the BBC’s Jakarta-based senior journalist Liza Tambunan. • This BBC podcast is supported by ads outside the UK.

  • Hey, it's Mike Rowe, and it just occurred to me that Zip Recruiter

  • has been sponsoring my podcast the way I heard it for the last 10 years.

  • Consequently, I've agreed to sing their jingle at the end of this commercial in four-part harmony all by myself.

  • Why would I do that?

  • Because years ago, when the Mike Rowe Works Foundation was expanding

  • and I was desperate to hire a few uniquely qualified individuals, I posted a job for free on Zip Recruiter,

  • and I found the people I was looking for in less than 24 hours.

  • It's that simple.

  • Ever since, I've been telling my audience that ZipRecruiter got me the most qualified, most interested people.

  • And now, I'm telling you.

  • Post a job for free at ZipRecruiter.com slash zip.

  • And watch what happens.

  • That's ZipRecruiter.com slash zip.

  • And now, here's their official jingle in four-part harmony.

  • Build your team.

  • Build it sooner.

  • Meet your match at ZipRecruiter.
