  • This BBC podcast is supported by ads outside the UK.

  • We've all heard the legends and lore of the Old West, the shootouts, the saloon brawls, the notorious gunslingers.

  • But you ever wonder what life was really like for regular folks in a frontier town?

  • Or is a fugitive outlaw riding the planes?

  • Or a pioneering family on the Oregon Trail?

  • Join me, Don Wildman, as we gallop across the vast frontier to uncover the truth of America's relentless push to the West.

  • American History Hit.

  • Brought to you by History Hit.

  • On the 28th of February, the US and Israel launched an attack on Iran, targeting military sites and the country's leadership.

  • The next day on Iranian TV, a visibly emotional presenter announced the death of the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.

  • But sorrow turned into defiance on TV screens as a new Ayatollah Khamenei was announced, the son, Mushtaba.

  • The succession was framed as something reminiscent of a rebirth.

  • Khamenei has been made decades younger.

  • We've not lost Khamenei, we have a rejuvenated Khamenei instead.

  • Immediately after the announcement, there were several people.

  • They went to their rooftops and started saying death to Mushtaba.

  • Dissent is dangerous here.

  • Just weeks earlier, mass protests were met with brutal force.

  • When the country later came under attack, state media switched into war mode.

  • We already had a more restrictive media environment from the January protests.
