  • Welcome to the LSE events podcast by the London School of Economics and Political Science.

  • Get ready to hear from some of the most influential international figures in the social sciences.

  • LSE events are taking a break over the summer, so we've dug into our archives

  • of more than 7,000 lectures to bring you some of our favourites, including this one.

  • Thank you for coming.

  • I'm delighted to welcome and introduce Bruce Caldwell for this lecture today,

  • which commemorates the 50th anniversary of Friedrich Hayek's Nobel Prize in Economics of 1974. Hayek,

  • who won the prize jointly with Swedish economist Gunnar Mervold,

  • taught here at the LSE from 1931 to 1950. Bruce is currently a research professor of economics

  • and the director of the Center for the History of Political Economy at Duke University.

  • His first book, Beyond Positivism, Economic Methodology in the 20th Century, explored the relationship between

  • 20th century philosophy of science and the writings of economists on questions of economic methodology.

  • This early interest is one I share and was how I first got to know Bruce at a workshop in Amsterdam.

  • But for the past three decades, Bruce's research has principally focused

  • on the multifaceted writings of the Nobel Prize-winning economist and social theorist Hayek.

  • Following that interest, Caldwell is the author of Hayek's Challenge, an intellectual biography of F.A.

  • Hayek.

  • He's the general editor of the collected works of Hayek and the editor of NPS 1947,

  • which is the transcript of the founding meeting of the Monte Pelerin Society.

  • He is currently working with Hans-Jörg Klausinger on a family-authorized biography of Hayek titled, Hayek, a Life.
