I'm Georgina Godwin.
For generations of readers, my guest today was the first writer to tell them the truth.
She wrote honestly about puberty, religion, sex, friendship, divorce, bullying,
and all the private fears children often believed they were carrying alone.
In doing so, she transformed children's literature
and became one of the most beloved and most challenged authors in America.
Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1938, she began writing after becoming a mother herself
and went on to publish books that would define adolescence
for millions of readers around the world, including Are You There, God?
It's Me, Margaret, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Forever and Summer Sisters.
Her most recent novel, In the Unlikely Event, returns to the New Jersey of her own childhood
and to a series of real plane crashes that haunted the town where she grew up.
Judy Blume, welcome to Meet the Writers.
Thank you so much.
Judy, it's wonderful to be here with you.
We've just established that you used to live just round the corner from me in London.
I know.
I wish we were still there.
We would have fun.
