I'm Georgina Godwin.
My guest today is a poet raised in Connecticut,
a state where the historical landscape left its mark on the way she thinks and writes.
After studying at New York University, where she gained her MFA,
she became a fellow at the University of Wisconsin and Emory before returning to Beloit College,
her alma mater, as a visiting assistant professor of English.
Her work has appeared in The New Yorker and Granter, and her first full collection, Joy is My Middle Name,
takes us through the years of early adulthood with wit,
candour and sharp observation, addressing race, pop culture and the performance of identity with humour and bite.
Sasha DeBevec McKinney, welcome to Meet the Writers.
Hi, I'm so happy to be here.
I'm loving you being here.
Can I just say how much I love your hair?
Thank you so much.
It's wild.
It's just brilliant.
Thank you.
It has the joy in it that your book has in its title.
I took some classes with Sharon Olds and we would see like Marie Howe read and stuff.
