I'm Georgina Godwin.
My guest today was born in New York and grew up between Mexico City, the Netherlands and the United States.
She studied comparative literature at Harvard and then completed a master's and doctorate at Oxford,
where her work brought together 19th century French poetry and magic shows.
She's the author of four award-winning novels and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2014. Her new novel,
The Shadow of the Object, moves between Mexico City and London.
It begins with a dog bite, then a hospital stay, and an unexpected friendship.
It opens into a world of magic lanterns.
Additionally, it's just been announced that the novel's been long-listed for the Booker Prize,
one of the most prestigious literary awards in the English language.

And every friend here seems to pronounce it differently too.
