  • Welcome to the LSE Events Podcast by the London School of Economics and Political Science.

  • Get ready to hear from some of the most influential international figures in the social sciences.

  • And very good evening to you all.

  • Welcome to the LSE Department of Economic History's annual Epstein Lecture.

  • I'm Sarah Horrell.

  • I'm the head of department in the Economic History Department, and it's my privilege to chair this event.

  • This year, it's my great pleasure to welcome Professor Paula Govy to be our Epstein lecturer.

  • But before I properly introduce her, I want to give you some housekeeping notes, please.

  • This is a hybrid event, so we've got people online as well as obviously yourselves in the room.

  • So it is recorded, so please bear that in mind when you're asking questions and things later.

  • Paula will give the talk and we'll take questions at the end of the talk.

  • For those that are online, can you put your questions

  • into the chat and then we'll pick them up and read some of them out as we go through?

  • For those of you in the room, if you can wait until you've got the microphone before you ask any questions,

  • that would be most helpful.

  • People will come round with microphones for that.

  • So let me just say a little bit about this lecture series.

  • It's an annual lecture series that was established in the memory of Professor Larry Epstein.

  • He was a dearly missed colleague in the Department of Economic History.

  • He was a mentor to many economic historians.
