The American economy is buoyant, certainly relative to the rest of the rich world.
It has defied gloomy forecasts.
But it could be doing even better.
We've calculated what we're calling the MAGA tax,
the cost of President Trump's erratic policymaking.
And today we'll take stock of the damage,
as well as putting numbers on what he's getting right.
We'll also have a stab at looking into the future.
Where is America's economy heading?
I'm Zanny Minton Beddoes, The Economist's editor-in-chief.
From our studios in London, welcome to The Insider.
Hi everyone.
With me to work through the puzzle of America's economy is, as always, Ed Carr, my deputy;
Charlotte Howard, our New York bureau chief;
and Archie Hall, our acting economics editor.
So before we get into the numbers, let us hear from America's cheerleader-in-chief, President Trump,
who has something very optimistic to say about America's economy.
Instead of 4% GDP or 3%, which I said so wonderful 3%,
it should be able to be 20 or 25%.
I don't know why it can't be.
