Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Windsor Johnston.
Thousands of people have been ordered to evacuate
as fast-moving wildfires threaten neighborhoods around Spokane, Washington.
Mayor Lisa Brown says emergency crews are working to assess
the scope of the destruction as evacuations continue across the region.
We know that multiple structures in homes have been lost.
We do not know the extent of that damage yet.
For example, the VA hospital in Spokane has been successfully evacuated.
And there are vulnerable people in other care facilities that are being evacuated as well.
Dozens of fires are burning across the state, fueled by hot, dry weather and strong winds.
More than 13,000 homes and businesses are without power.
The National Guard has been activated to assist with evacuations,
and officials warn fire conditions are expected to remain dangerous through the weekend.
