As Asian Americans, we find that it is sometimes difficult to express ourselves. Are we too Asian or are we too American? One thing's for sure - Asians have gained more visibility in popular culture and media in the past few years. Asian American identity has become stronger and we are beginning to create our own niche of style and beauty. • Hi.

  • Welcome back to eat your crust podcast.

  • I'm Crystal.

  • I'm Jisoo.

  • I'm Sarah.

  • Today we're joined by our long distance friend who moved all the way out to Boston after we all graduated.

  • We mentioned her a few times on the podcast, so it's so exciting to have her finally here.

  • Welcome, Sarah.

  • Thanks for having me.

  • So, since Sarah's all the way in Boston, we all hopped on a call early in the morning, or I guess, later in the afternoon, noon for Sarah.

  • And we wanted to talk about growing up as an asian American, things regarding beauty standards and parental expectations, because asian parents are always known to care the most about grades and stuff.

  • But then there's also a whole side of them having expectations for things like how we look, how we take care of our bodies, and how we're presenting ourselves in the world as Asians.

  • So we thought it would be a nice topic to talk about.

  • Yeah, I think growing up as especially an asian american girl, it's kind of a chaotic experience because you're pulled one direction when you're at school, with your friends, immersed with people who aren't asian.

  • But when you're at home, you have your parents talking about these asian beauty standards for yourself.

  • So I think it was an interesting experience growing up like this.

  • I never knew if I wanted to adhere to american beauty standards or asian beauty standards.

  • So how do you guys reconcile the two standards in your head?

  • Do you feel like you're more attached to the american beauty standards or more for the asian beauty standards?

  • For me, I feel like I'm more attached to the american beauty standards, but with an asian cultural background, and I'm working with, you know, my asian appearance, but how to make that look american.
