Growing up in a multicultural household means...more food variety, more languages, and more confusion about what is actually one culture or the other! Our guest today shares what it was like growing up half-Chinese, half-Korean in a predominantly Korean area, the various differences in a multicultural household, and how she relates to "halfie culture" as a half-East Asian, half-East Asian woman! • Hi.

  • Welcome back to eat your Crez podcast.

  • I'm Jisoo.

  • I'm Crystal.

  • And I'm Lori.

  • So welcome, Lori.

  • Last time Lori was with us was actually a long time ago.

  • It was, like, way back on episode 27, a subtle asian dating love story.

  • This week, we wanted to invite Lori on to talk about growing up in a multicultural family.

  • So Lori is actually half chinese, half korean.

  • And I feel like even though both cultures within your family are, like, east asian, there's still a lot of subtle differences, maybe even not just subtle differences, but differences in general.

  • And so I feel like growing up in a multicultural family can be very different from a monocultural family.

  • So we thought it would be fun to talk about, like, the differences and how it affected you growing up and just how it affected you as a person.

  • Yeah, definitely.

  • I'm excited to be here because there's definitely more nuances than I even initially thought, and I still learn about it.

  • Maybe we can start with one of the most fundamental foundations of a culture, which is language.

  • So my family is fully korean, and while we spoke multiple languages at home, it was Korean and English, which I think is pretty common for a lot of asian american families, to mix your cultural language as well as English in the household.

  • But for you, Lori, did your family speak multiple languages at home?

  • Yeah.

  • Yeah, definitely.
