Hi.
Welcome back to eat your crust podcast.
I'm Crystal.
And I'm Jisoo.
Unfortunately, I don't have a Gen Z word for us today, but I think our topic kind of deals with a Gen Z slang, or at least it's modern slang.
I don't know if I would necessarily completely attribute it to Gen Z, but the concept or slang word that this week's episode is about is pick me.
And this is usually directed at women, so it's like a pick me girl.
So to start this off, let's talk about what a pick me girl is.
So my understanding of a pick me, and actually, I'm not sure if this is the origin of the phrase, but definitely the way I see it used the most is on TikTok for a while, there was an audio that was really trendy, and it was basically someone going, so pick me, choose me.
And the concept, I think, was basically that there are people, mostly women, who try really hard to get male approval.
And in doing so, they want to differentiate themselves from other girls.
So they're like, oh, I'm not like other girls because I don't like pink, and I don't want to just sit and talk about makeup and lashes all day.
Like, I want to watch football or I want to do this, or, like, you know, they kind of lean in to things that the guy friends might like more and away from the things that girls would typically like.
I think I have a similar understanding.
Definitely kind of originating from that.
Like, oh, I'm not like the other girls kind of thing.
Okay.
But the funniest thing was, when I first heard this phrase a few years ago, before it really picked up steam, I, for some reason, just tied it to produce 101, the pop survival idol kind of show.
And they had a song that was literally like pick me.
So every time I heard or read this phrase in my mind, that song just, like, starts blasting in my head.
