This is Well Today.
The protection of workers in new forms of employment,
such as food delivery couriers, ride-hailing drivers and online sellers, has been under discussion in China for years.
This group makes up around 20% of the country's workforce.
That's more than 84 million people.
Now we may be seeing a turning point.
China has released a new set of guidelines promising stronger protection for the rights and interests of these workers.
So what will actually change?
How will these measures shape the day-to-day lives of flexible workers and their long-term prospects?
And what could this mean for China's broader labor market?
Hello and welcome to the panel discussion of World Today.
I'm Do Hongyu in Beijing.
To delve into these questions, we 're joined by Sohi Li, Professor in Organization Studies with the University of Kent,
Mike Baston, China Observer and Senior Lecturer at the University of Southampton,
and Chen Jiahe, Chief Investment Officer at Novamarkia Technologies.
Thank you for joining our program, dear panelists.
Now Chinese people are enjoying their beautiful Labor Day holiday.
And I think it's a great time to talk about the welfare, the interests and rights of workers.
