There's a quote by novelist Walter Mosley.
It's been sitting with me lately.
He says, failure is the heart of art.
And I keep coming back to that.
Not because I love failing.
I don't.
But because there's something honest about it.
There's no illusion in that statement.
No promise that what you make will land the way you want it to.
Just the quiet understanding that showing up again and again is the work.
Lately, I've noticed something inside myself that feels a little contradictory.
As this academic term comes to an end, instead of wanting to slow down,
I feel the urge to write more, to create more, which doesn't make much sense on paper.
The last few years have been full.
Going back to grad school, working full-time, writing, recording, teaching.
There are easier ways to live.
I know that.
But for those of us who are wired toward creativity, ease has never really been the point.
