Andy Burnham is pressing ahead with his Brexit U-turn, using a visit to Germany to make a ‘commitment to deeper EU co-operation’. The prime minister has promised closer ties on issues such as security, youth mobility and immigration. The move has been welcomed by senior European officials, including the French finance minister, who invited the UK ‘to come all the way back’ to the EU. With public polling now shifting against Brexit, is the door open for the UK to decide if it wants to rejoin? Lucy Hough speaks to Europe correspondent Jon Henley – watch on YouTube. • This is The Guardian.

  • We will continue to see an awful lot of warm words and encouragement.

  • We'd love to welcome you back with open arms, etc.

  • The EU isn't a monolith.

  • It's 27 member states.

  • They will all need to agree.

  • We have elections in Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Poland.

  • Within the next 12 months, the EU may be a very, very different place.

  • From The Guardians today in Focus, this is The Latest with me, Lucy Hart.

  • Our new Prime Minister, relatively new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham,

  • has made no secret about his desire to move closer to Europe.

  • John Henley, you are our Europe correspondent.

  • Europe has always kind of batted this away a little bit or been slightly aloof about,

  • you know, this is our choice, not yours.

  • But the mood feels like it's changing somewhat.

  • Would you agree?

  • Yeah, I mean, it definitely is.

  • I mean, I think, I mean, Europe has always been open to the idea of the UK returning.

  • And that, in fact, you know, European leaders said that pretty much,

  • you know, the day after the Brexit referendum, basically.
