  • It's been a day of, it feels, fairly frantic back and forth in the effort to nail down a peace deal between

  • the US and Iran, one that President Trump had confidently asserted would be signed today.

  • And yet in the middle of the day,

  • in Middle East time came the news that the Israeli military had launched a strike on Beirut.

  • A strike, the IDF claimed, which hit a Hezbollah command centre

  • and was a reprisal for the Iran-backed Lebanese militia firing into Israel.

  • Iran threatened to retaliate, and President Trump let it be known that he was pretty furious.
