Welcome to your two-minute tip, a short, practical English lesson for your busy day.
Learn it in two minutes.
Use it for years.
Today is my birthday, so today's tip focuses on how to talk about birthdays in English.
To say your age, use I am or I'm, not I have.
So don't say, I have 42 years.
The correct way is, I'm 42 years old.
Or we can simply say, I'm 42. On your birthday, use the verb turn, not become, to describe the change in age.
For example, I turned 30 last week.
My son is turning 16 tomorrow.
Finally, don't confuse the words birthday and anniversary.
A person's birthday is the date when they were born.
We typically use the word anniversary for the date when two people got married.
That's their wedding anniversary.
Or the date when something special or important happened, like the anniversary of the founding of a company.
