单集简介 ...

In this Quick Tok episode, Jack discusses three Chinese proverbs that we use in English. "Kill two birds with one stone." (直捉两只鸟) This proverb suggests achieving multiple goals or objectives with a single action, thereby maximizing efficiency. Just as using one stone to catch two birds saves time and effort, this saying encourages finding solutions that yield multiple benefits simultaneously. "If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help someone else." (若欲一时之快乐,躺下小睡;若欲一日之快乐,钓鱼去;若欲一年之快乐,继承财产;若欲一生之快乐,助人为乐) This proverb emphasizes the different levels of happiness one can experience. It suggests that short-term pleasures like napping or fishing may provide temporary joy, while more substantial happiness can be found in selfless actions such as helping others. The ultimate happiness, according to this saying, comes from making a positive impact on someone's life. "When you drink water, remember the spring." (饮水思源) This proverb serves as a reminder to remain grateful and acknowledge the origins or sources of the things that sustain us. Just as water originates from a spring, our accomplishments and well-being often trace back to the support and efforts of others or to our beginnings. • Welcome to the A to Z English podcast, where Jack and Sochil take you on a journey from learning the basics to mastering the nuances of the english language.

  • Our podcast is designed for non native speakers who are looking to improve their english skills in a fun and interactive way.

  • Each episode covers a wide range of topics, from grammar and vocabulary to slang and culture, to help you navigate the english speaking world with ease.

  • Welcome to the A to Z English podcast.

  • My name is Jack, and I am one of the hosts of the podcast here.

  • And today I am doing an episode that is related to chinese proverbs that we use in English.

  • And so I'm going to give you three chinese proverbs that native english speakers will sometimes use.

  • And I will also explain the meanings of these proverbs.

  • And another word for these are kind of idioms, I suppose, but some of them are longer, so we call them proverbs.

  • And so here is number one.

  • The first one is kill two birds with 1 st.

  • Kill two birds with 1 st.

  • This idiom reflects efficiency in completing multiple tasks at once.

  • It's used to describe accomplishing two objectives with a single effort.

  • And so I'm trying to think of an example of killing two birds with 1 st, but I think we use it when we talk about, like, for example, if the bank, I need to go to the bank and I need to go to the grocery store.

  • And luckily the bank is next to the grocery store.

  • So I can say, oh, I'm going to drive or take the bus to the grocery store, and I will buy some milk and withdraw some money from the atm, okay, get some money from the bank and buy some milk from the grocery store.

  • And all in one trip, right?

  • I took the bus to the grocery store, but I also went to the bank.

  • So I did two things.
