  • Welcome to the A to Z English podcast.

  • My name is Jack and I am one of the hosts of the podcast.

  • Today is a solo episode and I am going to do an idioms episode.

  • I've got three idioms that all use the verb go, and our first idiom is to go the extra mile.

  • To go the extra mile.

  • And this idiom means to put in additional effort or do more than what is expected in order to achieve a goal or provide exceptional service.

  • So, for example, she always goes the extra mile to make her customers happy.

  • And if you go the extra mile, it just means you're just really, really diligent.

  • You're putting in the extra effort to make something as good as it can possibly be.

  • It could be an experience, it could be a project.

  • You know, often we use it in, like, customer service.

  • So, for example, if you're eating at a restaurant and your server is really, really attentive, like, pays a lot of attention to you, fills your drinks, always checks up on you, asks you if you're okay, you know, just does a phenomenal, like, fantastic job as a server.

  • You could say, you know, our server went the extra mile.

  • You know, she really went the extra mile, or he really went the extra mile.

  • He did more than was necessary.

  • More than was necessary.

  • So that is to go the extra mile.
