Welcome to the A to Z English podcast.
My name is Jack, and I am one of the hosts of the podcast.
And today I am doing a solo episode, and I'm doing an idioms episode.
I'm going to give you three idioms that use the word witch, because Halloween is coming up soon, and I thought that it would be appropriate to teach you three idioms in which we use the word witch.
W I t c h.
Witch.
The first one is a witch hunt.
What is a witch hunt?
We know what the word witch means, and we know what the word hunt means.
But what does it mean together when there is a witch hunt?
A witch hunt refers to an investigation that targets or focuses on a person or a group unfairly, often with the intent of finding wrongdoing, even if there is no evidence of it.
And I'm going to give you a couple examples of a witch hunt.
Okay.
The teacher's search for the student who drew on the classroom walls became a witch hunt as every student was questioned.
So do you see how one student did something bad, and it maybe wasn't even a student in that class, but the teacher investigated and focused on all of the students in the class.
And so in that case, we would say it became a witch hunt.
Okay, hunting.
Hunting a witch.
Basically just blaming people who have nothing to do with the bad action.
