1859: Charles Darwin's "On the Origin of Species" Published Charles Darwin's groundbreaking work on evolution, "On the Origin of Species," was published, presenting the theory of natural selection. 1963: Lee Harvey Oswald Killed Lee Harvey Oswald, the alleged assassin of President John F. Kennedy, was shot and killed by Jack Ruby in the basement of a Dallas police station. 1971: D. B. Cooper Skyjacking A man using the alias D. B. Cooper hijacked a commercial airplane, extorted a ransom, and then parachuted out of the plane over the Pacific Northwest. His identity and whereabouts remain unknown. 1991: Freddie Mercury's Death Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the rock band Queen, passed away at the age of 45 due to complications from AIDS. 1999: The Sega Dreamcast Released in Japan Sega released its Dreamcast gaming console in Japan. It was the first in the sixth generation of video game consoles and introduced several innovations to the gaming world. 2012: Ceasefire in Gaza Strip An Egyptian-brokered ceasefire ended eight days of intense fighting between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
