Truman officially proclaimed the end of hostilities in World War two.
On December 31, 1983, the United States invaded Granada to restore order and protect american citizens.
On December 31, 1999, the United States handed over control of the Panama Canal to Panama.
Also on December 31, 1999, Russian President Boris Yeltsin resigned and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin became the acting president.
On December 31, 2004, the official opening of Taipei 101, the world's tallest skyscraper at the time, took place in Taipei, Taiwan.
On December 31, 2011, a suicide bombing in a church in Alexandria, Egypt, killed at least 23 people and injured dozens more.
And on December 31, 2019, the World Health Organization was informed of cases of pneumonia in Wuhan, China, later identified as the novel coronavirus Covid-19.
