The Russian Revolution of 1905 began with the Bloody Sunday massacre in St.
Petersburg, where peaceful protesters marching to present a petition to Tsar Nicholas II were fired upon by the Imperial Guard.
On January 2, 1920, the second Palmer raid took place in the United States during the Red Scare.
Over 3000 suspected radicals and anarchists were arrested in several cities.
On January 2, 1942, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the FBI, convicted 33 members of a german spy ring headed by Fritz Joubert Duquesne.
This event is known as the Duquesne spy ring case.
On January 2, 1959, Luna won.
The first spacecraft to reach the vicinity of the moon and to orbit the sun was launched by the Soviet Union.
On January 2, 1974, President Richard Nixon signed a bill lowering the maximum us speed limit to 55 conserve energy during an OPEC oil embargo.
And on January 2, 2006, an explosion in the Sago mine in West Virginia trapped 13 miners for nearly two days.
