  • Hello and welcome to Meet the Writers.

  • I'm Georgina Godwin.

  • My guest today has been a roadie, a stage designer, a television entrepreneur,

  • the founder of Yo Sushi and Yo Tell and one of the original dragons on Dragon's Den.

  • Before all that, he left school at 16, spent time in prison

  • and found himself backstage at some of the biggest moments in British music.

  • His memoir is Yo Man, rock and roll, robots and reinventing British dining.

  • Simon Woodruff, welcome to Meet the Writers.

  • Thank you.

  • It's lovely to have you here.

  • Now, I'm going to take you right back to the beginning because you grew up in Singapore.

  • Tell us what you remember about that.

  • Oh, I went to Singapore when I was two on a ship, a troop ship called the Dilwara and my earliest memories.

  • And we arrived in hot, hot Singapore.

  • I remember learning to swim at the age of three.

  • Lovely holidays out in the jungle.

  • My father in the army, seeing all the army people coming to dinner and being a bit jealous.

  • My dog dying.

  • Those are a few memories.

  • Oh, dear.
