  • Welcome to the LSE events podcast by the London School of Economics and Political Science.

  • Get ready to hear from some of the most influential international figures in the social sciences.

  • Hello, then.

  • Welcome, everybody.

  • What a pleasure to see you all here today.

  • It's great to have so many of you here at LSE and I also know there's a lot of people online as well.

  • This is an event, our annual lecture,

  • which is joint between the Department of Health Policy and LSE Health.

  • I'm the current head of department for the Department of Health Policy and my name's Andrew Street and that's all I'm going to say about myself.

  • But I'd also like to thank Professor Elias Mosialis, who's director of LSE Health,

  • who helped organize the event and invite Michelle to be with us.

  • And I'd also like to thank Annabel Fenton, who's the communications manager at LSE Health,

  • who among other people has helped put this event together, but has led much of the organization.

  • So thanks very much, Annabel.

  • It's a real pleasure, Michelle, to invite you here today.

  • Michelle Williams is now at Stanford University, which she joined in January,

  • where she's professor of epidemiology and population health.

  • Prior to that, she was a number of years at Harvard, at the Harvard T.H.

  • Chan School of Public Health.

  • She had the dubious privilege of being dean of faculty for seven years.
