The BBC understands that he has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
This comes months after the former prince had been stripped of his titles over ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
He has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
King Charles III, his older brother, issued a striking statement in response to the news,
saying in part, quote,
the law must take its course and promise in cooperation from the royal family.
Prior to the arrest, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer told the BBC that,
quote, nobody is above the law.
