A lot of short daily news podcasts focus on just one story.
But right now, you probably need more.
On Up First from NPR, we bring you three of the world's top headlines every day in under 15 minutes.
Because no one story can capture all that's happening in this big,
crazy world of ours on any given morning.
Listen now to the Up First podcast from NPR.
Before we start today's episode,
I want to let you know that we'll be discussing sexual abuse and rape.
In September 2024, French journalists have gathered in Avignon in southeastern France,
and they're there to cover what they've been told will be a deeply harrowing rape case.
But they're not expecting to be able to report much on it at all,
because the trial will take place behind closed doors.
And that's the case for almost all rape trials in France.
But then...
One of the lawyers in the case, who represents a 71-year-old woman,
announces that his client, the victim, has waived her right to anonymity.
Her name is Giselle Pelico.
Arriving at court to a chorus of support, Giselle Pelico.
A woman subjected to around 200 rapes, proud to show her face.
