  • you Hello and welcome to Meet the Writers, I'm Georgina Godwin.

  • Now we are in Charleston in South Carolina and there's a little bit of background noise that's

  • because we're sitting next to a beautiful swimming pool on a lovely,

  • lovely sunny day but there's a bit of traffic and a little bit of noise around us.

  • It is such a pleasure though to be reunited with today's guest.

  • We've spoken before but the world he now writes from has changed so profoundly that this feels like an entirely new conversation.

  • Over the past three years he's travelled across Ukraine and across the world observing,

  • listening and documenting with an honesty and clarity that have made in one of his country's defining voices.

  • His war diaries begin with our daily war capturing the first stretch of life after the full-scale invasion,

  • the shock, the dislocation and the strange persistence of routine.

  • Three years on fire moves into the third year of the conflict,

  • tracing everything from front-line journeys to surreal flashes of humour and the small rituals that allow people to endure.

  • And alongside, he's finally returned to fiction with the stolen heart.

  • And more we're going to hear all about it.

  • Andrei Kherkov, welcome to Meet the Writers.

  • Hello.

  • Since we last spoke, you've travelled widely across Ukraine and far beyond.

  • Where have these last three years carried you?

  • Geographically, geographically everywhere except maybe Japan, China.

  • But I went to India to talk about Ukraine.
