  • you Hello and welcome to Meet the Writers.

  • I'm Georgina Godwin.

  • My guest today is an award-winning Scottish writer,

  • broadcaster and fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

  • He's written across journalism, memoir and fiction.

  • His first book was a guide to surviving your quarter-life crisis,

  • followed by the memoir Maggie and Me, and the novel You Will Be Safe Here.

  • His latest work, The Two Robots,

  • turns to a couple of Scottish artists whose love and work once lit up Soho.

  • Damien Barr, welcome to Meet the Writers.

  • Thank you, Georgina.

  • I want to start with you before we get on to the two robbets.

  • Let's talk about Damien and your childhood in Scotland, in Bells Hill.

  • Bells Hill is where I was born.

  • It's actually also where the writer Amonata Forna was born in the maternity hospital,

  • which is no more there.

  • So I grew up near the maternity hospital in a village called New York Hill,

  • which was a former Pitt Village...

  • within healing distance of what would soon be a former steel town within healing distance again of Glasgow,

  • so if you can imagine that degree of distance.
