  • My name is Larry Kramer.

  • I'm the president and vice chancellor here at LSC,

  • and it's my privilege and honor to introduce this memorial session in remembrance of Lord Meghnad Desai,

  • scholar, public intellectual, and a cherished member of our community.

  • Lord Desai joined the London School of Economics in 1965.

  • He soon became known really quickly for his distinctive and unconventional approach to teaching economics to first-year students.

  • beginning his class with the work of Piero Srafa and strongly encouraging students to challenge Orthodox thinking.

  • He was appointed Professor of Economics in 1983.

  • From 1990 to 1995, he served as head of the Development Studies Institute.

  • In 1992, he founded the Center for the Study of Global Governance,

  • which he directed until his retirement in 2003.

  • Upon retiring, Magna became an emeritus professor,

  • and then in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the school and to scholarship,

  • he was awarded an honorary fellowship, our highest honor in 2004.

  • Across nearly four decades at LSE, he taught a wide range of subjects,
