My name is Larry Kramer.
I'm the president and vice chancellor here at LSC,
and it's my privilege and honor to introduce this memorial session in remembrance of Lord Meghnad Desai,
scholar, public intellectual, and a cherished member of our community.
Lord Desai joined the London School of Economics in 1965.
He soon became known really quickly for his distinctive and unconventional approach to teaching economics to first-year students.
beginning his class with the work of Piero Srafa and strongly encouraging students to challenge Orthodox thinking.
He was appointed Professor of Economics in 1983.
From 1990 to 1995, he served as head of the Development Studies Institute.
In 1992, he founded the Center for the Study of Global Governance,
which he directed until his retirement in 2003.
Upon retiring, Magna became an emeritus professor,
and then in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the school and to scholarship,
he was awarded an honorary fellowship, our highest honor in 2004.
Across nearly four decades at LSE, he taught a wide range of subjects,
