  • For a man who caught attention like few others,

  • President Trump certainly had it when he addressed the World Economic Forum in the Swiss ski resort of Davos today,

  • and not just the assembled gathering of political and business leaders sitting in stony silence in the main convention hall,

  • but people all over the world.

  • Why?

  • Because of the expectation that Mr Trump would, in the heart of Europe,

  • give some clarity about how he intends to fulfil his ambition to take control of Greenland.

  • In recent days,

  • the White House has continued to insist it wouldn't take military action off the table.

  • That, says almost everyone,

  • would mean the end of the transatlantic alliance and the collapse of the post-Second World War liberal order.
