  • Hello, and welcome back to Inside Defence from our studio in London.

  • I'm David Rennie, the economist, geopolitics editor, standing in for Shashank Joshi.

  • And today,

  • we're going to dive deep into the world of Russia's hybrid warfare and grey-zone conflict with the West.

  • And joining me is Gordon Carrera.

  • He's the host of the Rest is Classified podcast and the author of several acclaimed books on intelligence.

  • Gordon.

  • Welcome to Inside Defence.

  • Thank you very much for having me here.

  • It's great to have you on.

  • We're really lucky to have you for this

  • because we want to really look at how there was always a shadowy side in the Cold War to that grand contest between the Soviet Union and the West.

  • But there was a dark bit too.

  • There were the murders in back alleys.

  • There were the kind of mysterious fires on railway lines.

  • And today Russia isn't.

  • in open warfare with the West.

  • But that dark side of the contest is back with a vengeance.

  • And so we're going to explore how Russian sabotage has taken a 21st century turn.

  • There's now a gig economy for spies.
